Design and make your own Carnival costume inspired by sound system culture and migration, then wear it to perform at the Children's Day Parade at Notting Hill Carnival!
Over a series of workshops at the National Maritime Museum, you'll work with designer and artist Cee Boulaqui of Vibrance Mas to build bold, eye-catching pieces from sustainable and recycled materials, inspired by the Caribbean elders who shaped UK sound system and Carnival culture.
You'll also get to hear from sound system legends Saxon Sound System and The Mighty Ruler.
This free programme covers everything: all materials and snacks are provided, and we'll arrange transport to and from Notting Hill Carnival for all young people taking part, led by our experienced facilitators.
What you'll do
During these creative workshops, you'll have the chance to:
- Learn how Carnival costumes are designed and made, from first sketch to finished piece — and make your own!
- Explore the stories of Caribbean communities and the Windrush generation who shaped Carnival and sound system culture in Britain
- Hear from legendary names including Saxon Sound System and The Mighty Ruler
- Develop your performance skills through movement and choreography
- Build your confidence, creativity and communication skills
- Perform in the Children's Parade at Notting Hill Carnival Family Day
You're warmly invited to share and explore your own stories and heritage. If you'd like to bring photographs or recordings, you're very welcome to, but you don't have to.
Please fill out the online form by 3 July to sign up and we will email you. You will need to ask your parent or guardian to fill out some questions.
Who you'll meet
Saxon Sound System, one of the most iconic and influential names in UK sound system history — internationally acclaimed, globally recognised, and a landmark for generations of fans — will be coming to speak to the Young Carnival Creators!
The Mighty Ruler is one of Britain's original Windrush-era sounds. The founder's story has been the subject of a celebrated documentary. His son will come to share their extraordinary story with the Young Carnival Creators and how he carries on the legacy.
When are the workshops?
Wednesdays in July starting 8 July from 5–7pm (8, 15, 22 and 29 July)
All Wednesdays in August from 5–7pm (5, 12, 19 and 26 August)
Sunday 30 August – Performance at Notting Hill Carnival, exact timings to be confirmed once project starts.
Where will the workshops take place?
Workshops take place in our creative Studio and Learning Space at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich. Find out how to get here.
The final performance is on Sunday 30 August at Notting Hill Carnival Family Day. We'll arrange transport there and back for all young people, led by our experienced facilitators — exact details will be shared once the programme begins.
Who is the programme for?
- Young people aged 13–17
- Live, work or study in Greenwich – or any other London Borough
- No experience needed, just curiosity and creativity
We especially welcome applications from young people with Caribbean heritage and those who feel a personal connection to the project’s themes of migration, sound system culture, Notting Hill Carnival and the Windrush Generation. You are invited to celebrate and share stories of parents, grandparents or elders when taking part.
Do I need to bring anything?
This programme is completely free to attend. We provide all the art materials you need for your costume, plus snacks at every session.
We will arrange transport to and from Notting Hill Carnival for all young people taking part — you don't need to worry about getting there. If you’re worried about travel costs to come every week, contact us.
