Ings, Derek, BISN Co. Officer: Letters SS CHANTILLY, first voyage (19 October 1943 to 15 January 1945), including Home Trade. Hospital Ship from August 1944.

Letters numbered 1-108, arranged chronologially, some several pages long. Folder also contains a colour print-out copy of Ings's appointment letter. The letters describe Ings's everyday life at sea in a lot of detail, including the meals he eats, the personalities of his colleagues, various interactions with friends and acquaintances, details about his work and the ship, and discussion about the war. Some a handwritten, some are typed. There is a lot of reference to previous letters by their numbers, including references to Win and Bert's letters to Derek, which are not part of the collection. There is a real sense of confusion as letters are sent and received with greatly varying delivery times.
