Uncatalogued: Papers of Augustus Knight, Master Mariner, 1865-1949
File 1 contains a variety of letters, certificates and photographs. The letters include an order to Captain Knight from the Commander-in-Chief of the Cape Station to set sail at once to Beira to pick up the German Consul and his Secretary (dated August 10 1914). A second letter is a proclamation from the Provincial Commisioners Office that all Royal Naval Reserves present themselves at Mombasa and report to the commisioner (dated 4th August, 1914). There are number of additional letters and memos addressed from the East Africa Protectorate, and Eastern and South African Telegraph Company, one of which (dated to the 6th August, 1914), warns Captain Knight not to use wireless, "more than you can help". Additionally, there is another letter from the Treasury Office of Mombasa, of the British East Africa Corporation Ltd., denying Knight passage for the Imperial German Consul, dated 10th August. Certificates within this file include the following: Apprentice's Indenture for Kenneth Mackenzie Knight, dated 1st August, 1934; an ordinary apprentice's indenture for an Augustus Knight, dated 1882 (including a number of attached certificates of discharge). Photographs are largely naval, or nautical, in theme - no notes or other information have been given with them. Finally, there is a file included, with the title "Original Signals Received in H.M.S. ATTACKER", Concerning the Cessation of Hostilities with Japan in 1945. The file contains a number of naval documents, including a ship company list, a collective calls list for call signs used by the navy and/or particular naval fleets. The remainder of the file in filled with documents relating to Japanese surrender, including a Naval Message detailing the signing of the Instrument for the Occupation of Penang, dated 1 September 1945.
File 2: Contains 1 bundle of letters and 1 bundle of documents bound with wooden boards. The bound documents includes a large collection of A. Knight's Certificates of discharge. The bundle of letters are in airmail envelopes, and a re labelled "Walvis Bay 1915", "Loderitz Bucht 1915", "Miscellaneous, Durban, Cape Town, Kilindi, 1915", "Various unidentified 1915", "Nursing Sister Passes [?], Boer War, 1902". These contain photographs relating to their respective labels.
