The collection consists of seven folders of letters to his family from Lieutenant Harry Allen, HMS IRON DUKE, 1916-1920.

1st Folder: Correspondence 13 December 1916 - 9 March 1917.

2nd Folder: Correspondence 24 March - 22 August 1917.

3rd Folder: Correspondence 24 August 1917 - 31 January 1918.

4th Folder: Correspondence 2 February - 18 August 1918.

5th Folder: Correspondence 22 August 1918 - 4 April 1919.

6th Folder: Correspondence 13 April - 24 August 1919.

7th Folder: Correspondence 31 August 1919 - 22 January 1920.

Administrative / biographical background
Lieutenant Henry Reginald Allen was a Training Officer on HMS IRON DUKE, during the First World War. He joined the ship in December 1916 while IRON DUKE was flagship of the Grand Fleet under Admiral Sir David Beatty. Made an Instructor Lieutenant in 1918, Allen remained on IRON DUKE after the war as the ship was transferred to the Mediterranean and then to the Black Sea during the Russian civil war. He was demobilised in February 1920.
