Northern Regions, Vol. III: Asiatic Russia

'Northern Regions, Vol. III: Asiatic Russia'

Itinerary (quoted from title page): 'Deminions bordering on the volga. Circuit of the Caspian sea. Mountains of Caucasus. Ghilan. Mazendaran. From the North End of the Caspian Sea to the Urallian Chain'

Refers to 'The intelligence sent to me by Doctor Pallas' (p. 20), i.e. Pennant's correspondence with Peter Simon Pallas (1741–1811). For their printed correspondence up to 1781, see Carol Urness (ed), A Naturalist in Russia: Letters from Peter Simon Pallas to Thomas Pennant (Minneapolis, 1967). Some illustrations (e.g. pp. 122–123) are taken from Pallas's Reise Durch Verschiedene Provinzen des Russischen Reichs (Saint Petersberg, 1771–1776).

Pennant recalls being shown Siberian malachites by the Abbé Chappe d'Auteroche (1722–1769) during the former's continental tour of 1765, and notes that some were engraved in the latter's 'second volume of travels', p. 146.
