Western Hindostan.

Western Hindostan. An updated version published as The View of Hindoostan: Vol. I. Western Hindoostan (London, 1798).

Beginning with the River Indus, the itinerary delineates various historical routes into India before roughly following its western coasts as far as 'Ceylon' [Sri Lanka].

Elaborate illustrated title page dated 1792, including vulture, tiger skin, and the 'Fort of Severndroog' [Savandurga], the latter likely adapted from the European Magazine (May 1792).

Letters from Pennant to Richard Bull indicate initial composition of this volume in summer/winter 1791: see Curious Travellers Editions [https://editions.curioustravellers.ac.uk/], item ID 1138 & 1142.

Illustration of 'The Wentletrap' shell marked 'WHf', pp. 82–83.

Some information gathered from Joseph Banks (1743–1820) and Joan Gideon Loten (1710–1789), e.g. p. 204.

Full itinerary, general index, and indexes of 'Plants', 'Quadrupeds', and 'Birds' in rear of volume.
