Northern Africa

Full title: 'Africa: [Part] I Northern Africa'. Elaborate title page incorporating African wildlife (elephant, lion, crocodile, snakes, scorpions), antiquarian coins, and a quotation from Lucan's De Bello Civili, Book IX.

Pennant mentions working on the African volumes of the 'Outlines' in letters to Richard Bull dated from 23 August 1788, and seeking prints to illustrate them in a letter dated 17 February 1791: see Curious Travellers Editions [https://editions.curioustravellers.ac.uk/], Item ID 1080, 1082 & 1121.

Itinerary: 'From the mouths of the Nile along the Mediterranean coast of Africa, through the Streights of Gibraltar, and from thence to the river of Senegal, with an account of...Madeira, the Canary Isles, and those of Cape Verd[e]'. See The History of the Parishes of Whiteford and Holywell (1796), pp. 319–20.

Includes views, likely copied in by Moses Griffith, of 'Cavo Carbon' and 'Cavo Yvi', pp. 82-3; Cape Ferrat [?], pp. 114–115; 'Montana Llamada' and 'Yslas Chasarinas', pp. 120–121; The Pike of Tenerife [?], p. 274; and the Azores, pp. 320–321.

Pennant notes his reliance on the journals of Rev. Samuel Dick[e]nson, chaplain on board HMS Dunkirk (1754), for various matters including natural history and the wreck of HMS Lichfield in November 1758, pp. 178–180. Other sources include: 'Mr Peter Gwynn', information on the commerce of 'Mogadour' [i.e. Essaouira], p. 182; Dr Thomas Fothergill, Provost of Queen's College Oxford, letter on the life of Dr Thomas Shaw (1694–1751), also known to Pennant when a student at the same college, pp. 197–198, 223–224.

Itinerary and index in rear of volume.

Appendix: 'Hints for an account of the trading Caravans which pass from Morocco and Tunis to Nigritia'
