Goldsmith's College : a centenary account
Goldsmiths' College occupies the site of a distiller's house built in 1789 in New Cross. Educational activities have been carried on there since 1792. The premises were later used for a private school to the Royal Naval School in 1843. When the School moved to Eltham in 1889 the buildings were acquired by the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths. Between 1891 and 1905 the Company maintained a Technical and Recreative Institute. The buildings were presented to the University of London in 1904; Goldsmiths' College has been part of the University ever since. Known as a teacher training college, it also maintained a School of Art and an Evening Department. From about 1960 the range of activities expanded until in 1988 it was admitted as a full School of the University of London. This book was published as part of Goldsmiths' centenary celebrations in 1991 and tells the story of its development over the years. There are numerous black and white photographs, and an index of persons. Appendix B lists the Wardens of Goldsmiths' College from 1905.

Stena Line : celebrating 50 years of service /Bruce Peter.
A history of Stena AB, the Swedish passenger ship operator founded by Sten Allan Olsson and covering the period 1962-2012. Initially running passenger ferries on Scandanavian routes, the company soon extended its operations to car and cross-Channel ferries. Merging with rivals Sessanlinjen in 1981 and taking over Lion Ferry's routes from 1982, the company developed an increasingly global reach with attempts to expand into North American and Eastern European routes. In 1989, Stena secured ownership of the Zeeland Steamship Company (SMZ) joint operators with Sealink British Ferries of the Hook of Holland - Harwich route and in 1990 took control of Sealink British Ferries owned by Sea Containers. Stena extended its operations to the Dover Strait and Irish Sea routes, rebranding firstly as the Stena Sealink Line, then Stena Line. Illustrated throughout with photographs of Stena Line's vessels.

The unseen Lusitania : the ship in rare illustrations /Eric Sauder.
"Lost to a German torpedo on 7 May 1915, Cunard's RMS Lusitania captured the world's imagination when she entered service in 1907. Not only was she was the largest ship in the world, but she was also revolutionary in design as well as being a record breaker. Lusitania is now sadly remembered for her tragic destruction, sinking in eighteen minutes with the loss of around 1,200 souls. Through never-before-seen material, historian Eric Sauder brings RMS Lusitania to life once again. Filled with vivid, unseen photographs and illustrations from Eric's extensive private collection, this absorbing read will transport the reader back 100 years to a time when opulent Ships of State were the only way to cross the Atlantic."--Provided by the publisher.

Scottish born Joseph Russell Stenhouse (1887-1941), commanded the Aurora, the second ship taking part in Shackleton's Endurance expedition to Antarctica (1914-1917). Torn from her moorings in a storm, the Aurora was driven out to sea where she became trapped in pack ice for ten months before escaping and continuing her journey with a broken rudder. Returning to England, Stenhouse was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for sinking a submarine in the First World War and then after the war, the Distinguished Service Order for his part in the campaign against Bolshevism in Murmansk and Archangel. He later returned to the Antarctic as master of the Discovery during the National Oceanographic Expedition (1925-1927). Athenia torpedoed : the U-boat attack that ignited the Battle of the Atlantic /Francis M. Carroll.
"This book is an account of a disaster at sea, the sinking by a German submarine of the passenger liner Athenia sailing from Liverpool to Montreal, loaded with Americans, Canadians, and Europeans, attempting to cross the Atlantic before the outbreak of war. For Britain, the sinking of the Athenia was seen as both a violation of international law and a return to the kind of total war Germany had waged in the Great War."--Provided by the publisher.
