P34256; On board a Macao salt junk anchored at Sham Shui Po, Hong Kong. The photographer is on the poop looking forward showing the waist and foredeck. Her lug sails are stowed and are covered with matting. A number of wooden buckets, an iron bilge pump and two cargo hatches are in the foreground. Negatives numbers P34254, P34256 and P34260 were taken on board the same vessel on the same occasion.

Her sail has seven battens and is laid alongside the model, together with the mast, rigging, shelter and anchor. Negatives numbers P34493 to P34495 inclusive are of this model which is held by the National Maritime Museum (reference AAE0164)

P34094; A close up port quarter view of the stern of a Hainan C.S. stern fisher type junk anchored at Aberdeen, Hong Kong. Fishing nets are drying at her mainmast and her perforated rudder has been raised out of the water. She has the number 8941 painted on the upper part of her transom and her port number ends 85HC. A junk berthed to starboard has the port number 1068HA on her stern.

P33985; A port broadside view of the peaked stern Twaqo type junk Yung Hoe while she is anchored at Singapore. The vessel is of the two masted type and is registered at Singapore with the port number 2918. The Yung Hoe has occuli at the bow. The lug sails are stowed fore and aft and the top of the mainmast is out of the picture.

P34517; A starboard broadside view of a fully rigged model of the Antung trader type junk number 1938 at Liu Kung Tao. The model has a foremast, a mainmast and two mizzen masts sited to port and starboard at the stern. A lug sail is set on each mast as well as a flying jib, a staysail between the fore and main masts, a spinnaker on an outrigger boom attached to the foremast and a main topsail. Negative number P34516 is a very similar view.

P34459; A very distant starboard broadside view of the Ningpo fisher type junk 1883 under sail at Shanghai She is a two masted vessel with a spritsail rig and has an occuli at the bow. Her port number 1883 is painted twice on her hull. Two unidentified junks with two masted lug rigs are in the background. The photographer's ship was in Northern Chinese waters in the periods 3 June to 10 October 1937 and 8 June to 4 September 1938.

She is ketch rigged with a bowsprit, two masts fitted with gaffs and the mizzen mast has a boom. The photographer was at Singapore on four occasions during 1937 and 1938: 9 April to 1 May 1937, 13 January to 26 February 1938, 9 March to 23 March 1938 and 17 September to 30 September 1938.

She has occuli on the bow, an awning is rigged aft and a sampan is alongside. The port number 3098 is painted on her bulwark. Negatives numbers P34018 to P34020 inclusive are of the same junk.

P34034; Five sampans moored stern-on to the quay in the sampan harbour near the FMS Railway station pier at Penang. The boats all have occuli on their bow. People and bicycles are on the landing stage and a Royal Navy motor launch, probably from HMS Eagle (1918), is approaching the landing stage. A cargo liner is alongside a pier in the background. The photographer was at Penang 28 February to 7 March 1938.

P34376; The starboard bow of a Foochow trader type junk anchored beyween other junks at Shanghai. The photographer is fine off the starboard bow and only the bow of the junk is in the picture. An occuli is painted near the curve of the stem. The bow of a straight stemmed junk is on the left and the port quarter of another junk is on the right. The tops of the masts of all of the junks are out of the picture. A vertical format negative.

P34425; A starboard side view, taken from ahead of the beam, of the Amoy fisher type junk 1658 anchored in Chinese coastal waters, specific location unknown. Her sails are stowed fore and aft. She has an occuli on her bow and 'painted ports' along her hull. The tops of her fore and main masts are out of the picture. A similar craft is on the left. This type of craft has also been described by Waters as a 'Chuan Chow trader' and a 'large liner fisher'.

P34366; The forepart of a Pechili trader type junk beached at Weihaiwei. The photographer is on the foreshore aft of the partially dismantled bow section looking from amidships forward and slightly to port. The vessel is either being broken up or she has been in collison and cut in two. The jagged edges of the hull and deck planking would suggest a collision. A large number of junks are moored in the background.
