A port very near broadside view, taken from only just ahead of the beam, of the spritsail rigged barge Niagara (1898) under sail in the lower reaches of the River Thames. She is a staysail barge with no bowsprit and is on the starboard tack. She is in ballast and her leeboards are raised. There is a larger than usual number of people on board and she may be taking part in a Thames Barge Match. F. C. Gould & Son

P38155; Two spritsail barges trapped in the ice on the River Thames off Shoeburyness. The nearest vessel is a topsail barge and the furthest one is a stumpie. The River Thames as far downstream as the estuary remained affected by solid ice and ice floes for three weeks in February 1895. A copy negative produced by A R Grierson of a photographic print, the origins of which are unknown. Vertical format.
