'Holland type Submarine', in the No. 6 Dry-Dock, Portsmouth
Medium includes crayon. A very good depiction of the No. 6 Dry-Dock and the block mills sandwiched between two timber stores in Portsmouth Dockyard. This is one of the five Holland-type submarines, numbers 1 to 5, but it is not Holland No. 5, which had a solid upper skeg from the casing to the propeller ring guard, identical to the lower skeg. The inscribed caption and the word 'Restored' at right were probably added in the Museum at some point rather than by the artist, so far unidentified and possibly just a good amateur draughtsman.
