In the middle distance is a steam engine with open trucks behind partially filled with cane.

Lt. Surtees was on board the light cruiser HMS Danae (1916) during the British Special Service Squadron tour of the world between 1923 and 1924. They visted Hawaii/Honolulu between 5 and 12 June before departing for Vancouver.
