'Hawaiian Beauties'

A group photograph of four young Hawaiian girls posing with their right hands on their hips (elbows out) and their left hands extended with their elbows bent, as if in mid dance. They are each wearing a grass skirt (possibly made from fibres other than grass) with garlands of flowers around their necks and fronts, as well as a garland on their heads. The background is possibly painted, suggesting a studio photograph.

Lt. Surtees was on board the light cruiser HMS Danae (1916) during the British Special Service Squadron world tour in 1923-1924. Danae visited Honolulu/Hawaii between 5-12 June 1924 before departing for Vancouver.
