Golden Eagle (1909); Passenger vessel; Recreation vessel

Scale: 1:48. Half block model of Golden Eagle (1909), a paddle steamer. The model is made entirely in wood with metal fittings, some of which are silver-plated. The hull is painted brick red below the waterline and black above with a thin white line dividing them. Just above the waterline are 35 portholes in addition to a further 19 on the bulwarks and superstructure. The passenger salons are fitted with 26 large square windows. The topsides, including the paddle box are painted white. The central paddle box and sponson support a feathering paddle wheel, painted brick red. The paddle box is decorated with the vessel's name at the top and a globe and floral decoration below, all of which are highlighted in gold paint on a white background. The entire deck is enclosed by guardrails supported by stanchions and wooden capping and is painted a creamy brown with individual planks both scored and inked in. Deck fittings include an anchor davit, capstan and forward steering wheel at the bow. There are nine double-sided seats/lifesaving apparatus located centrally along the deck and side benches for passengers along the guardrails. Just forward of the bridge is a single raking funnel which has been cut down and painted yellow ochre. The bridge wing and chart house is located between the paddle boxes and is fitted with a pair of engine room telegraphs, binnacle, steering wheel, ventilator cowling and fire buckets. On the aft side of the paddle box is a double-ended lifeboat painted white, mounted on chocks and rigged on a pair of davits. There is also a transom-sterned boat painted white, mounted on chocks and rigged on davits above the steering position at the stern, below which is the main steering wheel and binnacle. The whole model is mounted on a surface-silvered mirror with a mahogany frame enclosed by a glazed mahogany display case, the base of which is covered by a brown felt material. There is an engraved ivory plaque reads "Model of paddle steamer "Golden Eagle" Built by John Brown & Company Limited Sheffield and Clydebank for the General Steam Navigation Co Ltd London.
