From object to art is a monthly craft club at The Prince Philip Maritime Collections Centre, offering a welcoming space to relax, create and connect with others through making.
Each workshop introduces a new craft technique, from painting and drawing to textile and more. Led by experienced facilitators, each session takes inspiration from a theme and object, encouraging you to experiment and develop your creative skills in a supportive environment.
Whether you're a seasoned maker or want to try something new, come along and
- enjoy hands-on activities
- meet like-minded people
- take a break from the everyday to immerse yourself in creativity
Workshops last 90 minutes and include demonstrations, materials and refreshments. No experience needed – just bring yourself!
- Can’t make it after all? Please drop us an email at bookings@rmg.co.uk, so we can pass your place on to someone else. We really appreciate it.
Georgian silhouettes: your 18th-century selfie
Saturday 4 April | 10.30am-12.30pm
Before cameras and phones, people captured their likeness using silhouettes – simple profile portraits cut from black paper.
In this session, facilitator Jaquie will guide you through creating your very own Georgian-style silhouette postcard.
This workshop is inspired by a silhouette of Horatio Nelson from the collection, which you'll have the chance to see in the stores. You'll explore how people in the 18th century represented themselves and others.
By the end of the session, you’ll have your own striking self-portrait to take home or even post to someone special. Who would you send yours to: a loved one, a friend or your future self?
- This session is suitable for all, and all materials will be provided.

Postcards, stories and sound
Saturday 2 May | 10.30am-12.30pm
Join acclaimed audiovisual artist Jasmine Kahlia for a creative workshop exploring maritime history through sound.
Using a selection of historic postcards from the collection, we’ll look closely at the imagery, styles and stories they capture – from seaside scenes to ships and distant ports. Together we'll think about what these images might sound like and experiment with ways to translate them into audio.
Through collaborative listening, recording and sound collage, participants will work together to create a communal soundscape inspired by the postcards. By the end of the session, we’ll have produced a shared audio piece while also uncovering new perspectives on the collection.
No prior experience is needed—just curiosity and a willingness to experiment.
- This session is suitable for all, and all materials will be provided.
