Loggia

Loggia - the balcony

The Queen's House was designed by architect Inigo Jones in 1616 and completed in about 1638.

It has a unique significance as the first building in England constructed in the Italian Renaissance style generally called ‘Palladian’.

The elegant first-floor loggia is the main external feature of the Queen’s House. Originally an Italian word, loggia means a “roofed open gallery” or a “room without a wall”.

The Queen’s House loggia was a place to see and be seen, where members of court could watch a hunt or take in the view.

During the London 2012 Olympic Games, VIP guests, including members of the Royal Family, went on to the loggia to watch the equestrian events, which took place on the south grounds of the Queen’s House.
