Defending Captain Lord : a Titanic myth part two
This book recounts the efforts made by the author to clear the name of Captain Stanley Lord, the captain of the SS Californian, the ship said to be in reach of Titanic at the time of the sinking. Lord was officially blamed by both the British and United States inquiries for failing to respond to the ship's distress signals and for the resulting loss of life. No charges were brought against him and Lord spent the rest of his life trying to clear his name. In 1958 following the release of the film based on the book A Night to Remember, Lord approached the Mercantile Marine Service Association to help him clear his name. The author of this book was then the General Secretary of the Association and he took up Lord's case, campaigning on his behalf for the case to be re-examined. The author's book, A Titanic Myth - the Californian Incident, reassessed the evidence against Lord and concluded that Lord had unjustly been made a scapegoat for the loss of life. However, the subsequent publication of The Ship that Stood Still attempted to prove Lord's guilt and led to the author bringing a libel case against the publishers. The case was subsequently settled and in this work, the author comments on the allegations made and seeks to refute the passages he considered unfair or inaccurate to Lord.

An introduction to ocean letters /cby Roger Hosking.

Arctic convoys 1942 : the Luftwaffe cuts Russia's lifeline /Mark Lardas ; illustrated by Adam Tooby.
"Between spring and autumn 1942, Germany was winning the battle of the Arctic Convoys. Half of PQ-15 was sunk in May, PQ-17 was virtually obliterated in July, and in September 30 per cent of PQ-18 was sunk. The Allies were forced to suspend the convoys until December, when the long Arctic nights would shield them. Mark Lardas argues that in 1942, it was Luftwaffe air power that made the difference. With convoys sailing in endless daylight, German strike aircraft now equipped and trained for torpedo attacks, and bases in northern Norway available, the Luftwaffe could wreak havoc. Three-quarters of the losses of PQ-18 were due to air attacks. But in November, the Luftwaffe was redeployed south to challenge the Allied landings in North Africa, and the advantage was lost. Despite that, the Allies never again sailed an Arctic convoy in the summer months. Fully illustrated with archive photos, striking new artwork, maps and diagrams, this is the remarkable history of the Luftwaffe's last strategic victory of World War II."--Provided by the publisher.

Naval eyewitnesses : the experience of war 1939-1945 /James Goulty.
"Although many books have been written about naval actions during the Second World War - histories and memoirs in particular - few books have attempted to encompass the extraordinary variety of the experience of the war at sea. That is why James Goulty's vivid survey is of such value. Sailors in the Royal Navy and the Merchant Navy experienced a war fought on a massive scale, on every ocean of the world, in a diverse range of vessels, from battleships, aircraft carriers and submarines to merchant ships and fishing boats. Their recollections are as varied as the ships they served in, and they take the reader through the entire maritime war, as it was perceived at the time by those who had direct, personal knowledge of it. Throughout the book the emphasis is on the experience of individuals - their recruitment and training, their expectations and the reality they encountered on active service in many different offensive and defensive roles including convoy duty and coastal defence, amphibious operations, hunting U-boats and surface raiders, mine sweeping and manning landing and rescue craft. A particularly graphic section describes, in the words of the sailors themselves, what action against the enemy felt like and the impact of casualties - seamen who were wounded or killed on board or were lost when their ships sank. A fascinating inside view of the maritime warfare emerges which may be less heroic than the image created by some post-war accounts, but it gives readers today a much more realistic impression of the whole gamut of wartime life at sea."--Provided by the publisher.

Royal Navy torpedo-bombers vs Axis warships : 1939-45 /Matthew Willis
"Drawing on rare, historical photography and specially commissioned artwork, Matthew Willis explores the heroic feats of the few Royal Navy's obsolescent biplanes that stood between the state-of-the-art Axis warships and their objectives. Focusing on the technical specifications of both opponents, using original records, and detailed armament and cockpit views, this book explores the key attributes and drawbacks of the disadvantaged Royal Navy torpedo-bombers against the mighty Regia Marina and Kriegsmarine destroyers and raiders, covering a wide range of sea battles, from the more famous attacks such as the strike on the Bismarck, the tragic events of the Channel Dash or the clash with the Italian battle fleet at Taranto, to less covered sea battles such as the Battle of Matapan. Despite their powerful weaponry and heavy armour protection, the Axis warships proved vulnerable to a skillfully and audaciously flown torpedo-bomber, thanks to innovative commanders exploiting every possible advantage. Including rare personal recollections from the airmen who flew the torpedo-bombers and historical accounts from the Axis warship crews, this book describes each and every facet of this dramatic duel."--Provided by the publisher.

Tracing your British Indian ancestors : a guide for family historians /Emma Jolly.
"Tracing Your British Indian Ancestors gives a fascinating insight into the history of the subcontinent under British rule and into the lives the British led there. It also introduces the reader to the range of historical records that can be consulted in order to throw light on the experience of individuals who were connected to India over the centuries of British involvement in the country. Emma Jolly looks at every aspect of British Indian history and at all the relevant resources. She explains the information held in the British Library India Office Records and The National Archives. She also covers the records of the armed forces, the civil service and the railways, as well as religious and probate records, and other sources available for researchers. At the same time, she provides a concise and vivid social history of the British in India: from the early days of the East India Company, through the Mutiny and the imposition of direct British rule in the mid-nineteenth century, to the independence movement and the last days of the Raj."--Provided by the publisher.

"Arriving home late on a winter's night on 30 June 1858, Alexander Reid found his wife Smyth lying severely burnt and unconscious in the fire hearth with their baby son Alexander cradled in her arms. This is the story of Alexander Reid who emigrated from Scotland to New South Wales with his young bride Smyth Kydd in 1841. The narrative discusses his ancestry, journey to a new land and his life in Australia where Smyth met a tragic death and Alexander formed new relationships with Mary Ann McKenzie and Catherine Mary Rooney. The story evolves to relate the lives of Alexander's thirteen children, their partners and a diverse but limited selection of his grandchildren. Stories of descendants who served in the Boer War, the First World War and those that made the ultimate sacrifice in the Second World War are told."--Provided by the publisher.

English paleography and manuscript culture, 1500-1800 / Kathryn James.
"An engaging, accessible introduction to reading and understanding early modern English manuscripts. This engaging book provides an essential introduction to the manuscript in early modern England. From birth to death, parish record to probate inventory, writing framed the lives of the early modern English. The book offers a detailed technical introduction to the handwriting of the period, from 'secretary hand' through the 'copperplate' that defined the early British Empire. Case studies trace the significance of manuscript to British cultural identity, exploring the intersections of manuscript and print, the roles of manuscript in the bureaucracy of the early modern state, and the complex practices surrounding manuscript in the lives of early modern readers and writers. Exercises offer the opportunity to practise reading and transcription, pointing to examples ranging from John Lydgate through William Wordsworth. Richly illustrated and drawing extensively on Yale University collections, this book opens the study of early modern English manuscript to a new generation of students and scholars."--Provided by the publisher.

The coal black sea : Winston Churchill and the worst naval catastrophe of the First World War /Stuart Heaver.
"On the morning of 22 September 1914, just six weeks into the First World War, three Royal Navy armoured cruisers were sunk by a German U-boat in the southern North Sea. The action lasted less than 90 minutes but the lives of 1,459 men and boys were lost - more than the British losses at the Battle of Trafalgar or in the sinking of RMS Lusitania. Yet, curiously, few have ever heard of the incident. The Coal Black Sea tells the extraordinary true story of the disaster from the perspectives of the men serving on HMS Aboukir, Hogue and Cressy, and the German submariners who orchestrated the attack. It also examines how the ignominious loss provoked widespread criticism of the highly ambitious First Lord of the Admiralty, the 39-year-old Winston Churchill. While the families of the victims grieved, Churchill succeeded in playing down the significance of the disaster and shifted the blame to those serving at sea to save his faltering career. Using a range of official and archival records, Stuart Heaver exposes this false narrative and corrects over a century of misinformation to honour those who lost their lives in the worst naval catastrophe of the First World War."--Provided by the publisher.
