A landscape photograph of fern trees, large fern bushes and taller trees in the gully near Melbourne, Australia. This was a popular area for visitors because of the spectacular flora and fauna. The officers of the Flying Squadron visited the gully on 3 December 1869

Frederick North was Assistant Paymaster on board HMS Barrosa (1860), a wooden screw corvette, while it was part of the Royal Navy Flying (Detached) Squadron that sailed from England in June 1869. The squadron visited Melbourne between 26 November and 7 December 1869.
