A view across a Guanabara Bay in Rio de Janeiro, towards Candelária Church
A black and white landscape photograph across Rio de Janeiro’s Guanabara Bay in Brazil. The terracotta roofs of buildings are in the foreground of the image. The Candelária Church, with two large bell towers, can be seen in the centre of the photograph, surrounded by smaller buildings. A series of arches is located closer to the waterfront, behind what could be small piers. The two bell towers of Our Lady of Mount Carmel church (Igreja Nossa Senhora do Carmo da Antiga Sé), formerly Rio de Janeiro’s cathedral until 1976, are in the far left-hand side of the image in front of woodland. A mountain range is visible in the distance. Beneath the church, on the water’s edge, is a building with eight identifiable windows. Original caption (handwritten beneath the photograph): ‘199; Rio de Janeiro’.
