Uncatalogued: Letters of Elizabeth Grace Hickey and her husband Staff Surgeon Thomas Canning Hickey
Bundle of family letters written by Elizabeth (Lizzie) Grace Hickey, with a few by her husband Thomas (Tom) Canning Hickey, sent from the Royal Naval Hospital at Esquimalt, British Columbia, between May 1884 and June 1887.
Staff Surgeon Hickey had been appointed to the battleship HMS SWIFTSURE (1870), flagship on the Pacific station, with additional responsibility for the sick quarters at Esquimalt. Some of the letters were sent during their journey to Esquimalt, which included a voyage across the Atlantic on the passenger liner PARISIAN (1881) in May 1884. This followed their wedding at Cholton-on-Medlock, Manchester, in the same month.
