In-letters and orders received by the Navy Board

On the orders of the Minister and Church Wardens of St Clement Danes and St Martins in the Fields, I inquired into the truth of certificates given for the widows and children of William Whiston and Thomas Fowler of the first parish and the widow and children of Thomas Tiplazy of the latter. Mr Clark, one of the Churchwardens of St Clement living in Clare Street, could give no account of the widow and children and a woman employed in distributing money to the poor could not remember that they were ever in the parish, but Mr Clark owned his hand to the certificate.. Mr Preeda, Curate of the parish likewise owned his hand to the certificate but knew nothing of them. Mr (?) Curate of the parish in the absence of Mr Preeda, owned his hands to both certificates but knew nothing of the people. Mr Apthoys, Churchwarden of St Martins in the Fields, owned his hand to many certificates but knew nothing of the children, he signing seeing the Vicar's hand before.
