Get creative with artist Sharon Walters at the National Maritime Museum and the Queen’s House, to make artwork that tells your story.
Inspired by Sharon Walters’ display The Many Invincible Ones, now on show in the Queen’s House, this hands-on workshop is all about self-expression, identity, and imagination. You will experiment with cutting, layering, and combining images to create bold, personal pieces that reflect who you are and what matters to you.
Bring your own photos, prints, or anything meaningful, or use a wide range of materials provided. No experience is needed, just curiosity and a willingness to try something new.
Expect a relaxed, welcoming space where you can explore ideas, get inspired, and connect with others your age.
Where is the workshop?
The workshop will start and finish in the Learning Space at the National Maritime Museum, on the museum’s ground floor with step-free access. To find out more, read about how to find the National Maritime Museum.
We will also visit Sharon Walter's exhibition at the Queen's House as a group, a short walk away.
About Sharon Walters
Sharon Walters is a London-based artist who uses collage, photography, film, and paper cut-outs to explore Black identity, history, and storytelling.
Her ongoing project Seeing Ourselves brings together collage, podcasts, film, and live events to create powerful, layered images of Black women. Her signature paper cut-outs are often displayed in glass, where their shadows become part of the artwork, hinting at memory, presence, and what has been left out of history.
Sharon has exhibited her work in London, Birmingham, and internationally, including with Gagosian and at The Photography Show at the Armory in New York. Her work is also part of the collection at the National Portrait Gallery.
She received the Reach Art Prize in 2019 and the Mosaic Art Award in 2023. In 2024, she became a Caird Research Fellow at Royal Museums Greenwich, where her work is now part of a major display and public programme.
