Richard Hakluyt and travel writing in early modern Europe / edited by Daniel Carey and Claire Jowitt.
"This is an interdisciplinary collection of 24 essays which brings together leading international scholarship on Hakluyt and his work. Best known as editor of "The Principal Navigations" (1589; expanded 1598-1600), Hakluyt was a key figure in promoting English colonial and commercial expansion in the early modern period. He also translated major European travel texts, championed English settlement in North America, and promoted global trade and exploration via a Northeast and Northwest Passage. His work spanned every area of English activity and aspiration, from Muscovy to America, from Africa to the Near East, and India to China and Japan, providing up-to-date information and establishing an ideological framework for English rivalries with Spain, Portugal, France, and the Netherlands. This volume resituates Hakluyt in the political, economic, and intellectual context of his time."--Back cover.

By steamer to the Ayrshire coast / Alistair Deayton
"At the turn of the twentieth century new laws introduced paid holidays for the masses and the seaside towns of Scotland saw a huge influx of visitors. From Glasgow, Paisley and the industrial heartland of Scotland, poured holidaymakers on the Fair Holiday trip 'doon the watter'. Some Scottish resorts such as Largs, Fairlie, Troon, Ardrossan, Saltcoats, Millport, Gourock and Wemyss Bay saw their populations double or treble for much of the summer. By the end of the 1960s, the annual Fair Holiday was in decline. No longer was there as great a need to close factories for a week, nor was the holidaymaker so reliant on the pleasure steamers. Cars and aircraft had taken their toll and the resorts began to decline. Alistair Deayton, one of the acknowledged experts on the Clyde pleasure steamers, and author of many books on the subject, shows the Ayrshire and Renfrewshire resorts in their heyday, while exploring their decline, as well as that of the pleasure steamers, only one of which, Waverley, remains today."--Provided by the publisher.

Dèonitz, U-boat, convoys : the British version of his memoirs from the Admiralty's secret Anti-Submarine Reports /Jak P. Mallmann Showell.
"The memoirs of Admiral Karl Dèonitz, Ten Years and Twenty Days, are a fascinating first-hand account of the Battle of the Atlantic as seen from the headquarters of the U-boat fleet. Now, for the first time noted naval historian Jak P. Mallmann Showell has combined Dèonitz's memoirs in a parallel text with the British Admiralty's secret Monthly Anti-Submarine Reports to produce a unique view of the U-boat war as it was perceived at the time by both sides. The British Monthly Anti-Submarine Reports were classified documents issued only to senior officers hunting U-boats, and were supposed to have been returned to the Admiralty and destroyed at the end of the War, but by chance a set survived in the archives of the Royal Navy's Submarine Museum in Gosport, allowing the reader a hitherto unavailable insight into the British view of the Battle of the Atlantic as it was being fought. Together with the author's commentary adding information that was either unknown or too secret to reveal at the time, this book gives possibly the most complete contemporary account of the desperate struggle in the North Atlantic in the Second World War."--Provided by the publisher.

British pirates and society, 1680-1730 / by Margarette Lincoln.
"This book shows how pirates were portrayed in their own time, in trial reports, popular prints, novels, legal documents, sermons, ballads and newspaper accounts. It examines how attitudes towards them changed with Britain's growing imperial power, exploring the interface between political ambition and personal greed, between civil liberties and the power of the state. It throws light on contemporary ideals of leadership and masculinity - some pirate voyages qualifying as feats of seamanship and endurance. Unusually, it also gives insights into the domestic life of pirates and investigates the experiences of women whose husbands turned pirate or were captured for piracy. Pirate voyages contributed to British understanding of trans-oceanic navigation, patterns of trade and different peoples in remote parts of the world. This knowledge advanced imperial expansion and British control of trade routes, which helps to explain why contemporary attitudes towards piracy were often ambivalent. This is an engaging study of vested interests and conflicting ideologies. It offers comparisons with our experience of piracy today and shows how the historic representation of pirate behaviour can illuminate other modern preoccupations, including gang culture."--Provided by the publisher.

The role of the Royal Navy in South America / by Jon Wise.
"This book demonstrates the importance of the presence of the Royal Navy in South America. Historically there have been no treaty obligations and few strategic considerations in the region, yet it is frequently referred to as forming part of Britain's 'unofficial empire'. The role of the Navy in supporting foreign relations and promoting commerce is examined during a period of the twentieth century which is often associated with the decline of the British Empire."--Back cover.

The unseen Olympic : the ship in rare illustrations /by Patrick Mylon.
"RMS Olympic was created during a period of intense competition between the north Atlantic shipping lines. The lead ship from the White Star Line, sister to the ill-fated Titanic and Britannic, Olympic encompassed all the qualities the line was striving for in size, opulence and luxury. Moreover, she was the only sister to enjoy a lengthy and distinguished career, including time spent as a troopship in the First World War. She served as the White Star flagship from 1911 to 1935, when she was finally scrapped. This illustrated history is packed with stunning postcards, images and memorabilia from author Patrick Mylon's unrivalled collection. This sumptuous book presents the definitive 'unseen' history of this grand ocean liner."--Provided by the publisher.

At the crossroads between peace and war : the London naval conference of 1930 /edited by John Maurer and Christopher M. Bell.
"This volume provides fresh perspectives on the international strategic environment between the two world wars. At London in 1930, the United States, Great Britain, and Japan concluded an important arms control agreement to manage the international competition in naval armaments. In particular, the major naval powers reached agreement about how many heavy cruisers they could possess. Hailed at the time as a signal achievement in international cooperation, the success at London proved short-lived. France and Italy refused to participate in the treaty. Even worse followed, as within a few years growing antagonisms among the great powers manifested itself in the complete breakdown of the interwar arms control regime negotiated at London. The resulting naval arms race would set Japan and the United States on a collision course toward Pearl Harbor. "--

Painting at the edge : British coastal art colonies 1880-1930 /Alison Bevan ... [et al.] ; editor, Laura Newton.
"The authors bring together the story of Britain's far-flung coastal art colonies at Newlyn, St Ives, Lamorna, Walberswick, Staithes, Cullercoats, Cockburnspath and Kirkcudbright. Publication comes at a time of renewed interest in the artists who worked in these late-nineteenth-century colonies. Each colony was sited in a small community dependent on fishing or farming and far enough away from urban centres to retain much of their old customs, costumes and ways of life, yet reasonably accessible by rail and road. Many of the paintings produced at these eight colonies were concerned with rendering a 'truthful' depiction of a particular time and place, and can be seen as a celebration, almost, of various unique aspects of a British way of life that was even then fast disappearing."--Provided by the publisher.

Mapping Antarctica : a five hundred year record of discovery /Robert Clancy; John Manning; Hank Brolsma.
Everyone likes maps and maps are always used to illustrate the many books on the Antarctic.
