A 50-gun Frigate with her staysails hoisted, calm and fine, awnings spread

No. 35 of 73 (PAI0889 - PAI0961)

Inscribed on lower edge of sheet 'A 50-gun Frigate with her staysails hoisted, calm and fine, awnings spread.'

This pen and ink drawing is unlike other drawings in the album and the handwriting is unlike the rapid hand that he used on sketches from life. It was possibly drawn for teaching purposes to demonstrate the rigging of the ship. The skilful use of washes on the sails is typical. Later in his life Schetky developed a technique of drawing with a quill pen and using the feather to apply washes.
