Bottle
Glass bottle with glass stopper, containing yellow residue. Labelled "Surg. spirit". Surgical Spirit is 70% Isopropyl Alcohol. The term Surgical Spirit may also refer to Rubbing Alcohol, Methylated Spirits and/or Methanol. Surgical Spirit is a widely used substance particularly for cleaning, soothing and sanitising skin prior to giving injections and performing surgery. I have not found any nineteenth-century mentions of it.
