Medicine chest

Mahogany medicine chest with brass handles at the sides. Hinged lid on top. Top portion has four deep compartments. In centre, containing three large bottles with brass caps. Hinged door at front, compartment inside has rack containing six bottles with typed labels. Seven drawers below with ivory knobs - four have sliding lids. Bottom drawer contains four fitted glass dishes, thread and a hypodermic case. At the back is a second compartment containing eight more bottles. In top - a canvas case containing six surgical instruments. The style of the chest is typical of the late eighteenth, early nineteenth century (See Ann Mortimer Young, Antique Medicine Chests, 1994). However, the contents of this chest are almost all from the late nineteenth century, suggesting the chest was in use and refilled for a substantial period.
