Cargo vessel; Junk
Scale: Unknown. A model of a junk made entirely in wood, which has been stained, varnished and painted. The hull has been made plank on frame and is varnished below the waterline, and painted above. The bulwarks are painted with black panels and red framing. The port and starboard bows are painted red with an oculus. The hull shape is flat-bottomed with a perforated keel. The bow has a Ying Yang symbol in black and white. A square frame extends out from the port and starboard bows, the front of which accommodates two small windlasses. The foredeck has provision for a foremast and there are two hatches. The main deck has eight hatches in line, all with removal hatch covers. The fourth hatch cover incorporates a tabernacle for a mainmast. Between the tabernacle and the bulwarks, there are two windlasses. There are two further windlasses extending the width of the deck, the forward one has two lengths of rope to which is attached two large killicks that are stowed on the deck. The poop deck has an entry port with a semi-circular roof. There are two balustraded galleries on the port and starboard stern quarters. The stern has a taff rail, beneath which are three painted panels depicting a red sun in the centre with flowers either side. There is a large fenestrated rudder which is attached by a rope to the front of the bow and the top of which passes through the poop deck. The model is equipped with a triangular ensign, steering oar, steering oar support, ship's boat and steering oar, 12 oars of various designs and what appears to be a boat hook. The model is displayed on two short rectangular supports and two turned stabiliser supports, mounted on a wooden rectangular baseboard with bevelled edges and grained to resemble mahogany.
