George Philip Rivers, born in London in 1888, was third engineer on the merchant vessel GEORGIC (1895), Oceanic Steam Navigation Co. Ltd., captured and sunk by the German raider MOEWE off Newfoundland on 10 December 1916. The portrait shows him during internment at the officers camp at Wahmbeck in Germany.
