N26167; Two men taking measurements of a sheet of steel after welding during peening trials held in No. 1 Ship Shop in Portsmouth Dockyard. The test piece is edge welded to a 40 lbs base plate which is welded to T bar stiffeners. The men are each using an instrument fitted with a gauge. The test piece has No. 5 complete written on it.

She was hit the three bombs while alongside a jetty at Portsmouth on the night of 10-11 Mar. 1941 and had to be beached on a mud bank. She was refloated and dry docked for repairs and conversion to short range escort.

The propeller blades and the forward part of the A bracket are damaged as a result of a collision with the battlecruiser Renown (1916) off Gibraltar on 23 Jan. 1935. N25484; Looking east along the floating dock AFD 11 (1924) from the top of the south side wall in the centre of the dock. The dock is moored in Fountain Lake, Portsmouth Dockyard. The floor of the dock is cluttered with wooden towers, steel reinforcing, scaffolding, timber, concrete rubble and railway tracks, the aftermath of the construction in the dock of phoenix floating caisson units. A large number of men are working to clear the chaos.

The test piece is marked No. 9 root run ready for peening. Peening is the process of working a metal's surface to improve its material properties, especially after welding to help relieve the tensile stresses that develop on cooling in the welded metal (as well as the surrounding base metal).

N27186; Looking down from the upper floor of the Duchess of Kent Barracks, Portsmouth, showing where a part of the building was completely destroyed by bombs in 1941. The remains of a stone staircase can be seen in the centre. A pile of rubble is waiting to be cleared. In 1946 the bombed out buildings that once formed Clarence Barracks were transformed into the first permanent home for members of the W.R.N.S. at Portsmouth.

N25554; Looking down on the after part of the United States destroyer Nelson (1942) from above the port side on North Corner Jetty in Portsmouth Dockyard showing the missing No. 4 gun mount and stern and the damage to the superstructure supporting No. 3 gun mount. Her stern was blown off by a torpedo from the German motor torpedo boat S.138 off Omaha Beach, Normandy, and temporary repairs were undertaken in Portsmouth Dockyard to enable her to get to Londonderry.

N25343; Looking down on the south side of the AFD Jetty, Fountain Lake, Portsmouth Dockyard, from the top of the south wall of the Admiralty Floating Dock 11 (1924). Berthed on the jetty are a floating steam pile driver with the cable lighter X134 (1915) outboard of her. The Portsmouth Dockyard negative register number P229/43 has been written in the bottom left corner of the negative.

N24420; A port quarter view of a large waterline model of the battleship Malaya (1915) on a table in the mould loft in Portsmouth Dockyard. The model is not overly detailed but is inaccurate in many respects. The searchlight towers are as in 1917 but the bridge and turret platforms are as in 1926. She has aerials rigged and is flying a rear-admiral's flag. There is some damage to the model, especially to the guard rails and stanchions.
