Bottle

Glass bottle with a glass stopper that is covered with a piece of leather with string wrapped round. Black liquid inside. Printed label reads "Volatile Tincture of Varerian". Second label has handwritten instructions "Half to a teaspoonfull in water" and printed company name "Twinberrow, Dispensing Chemist, 2, Edwards Street, Portman Square." Savory 1836, p.93: “Tincture of Valerian, Ammoniated. [In the index it is listed as Tincture of Valerian, Volatile]. In doses of from one to two drachms, mixed with milk, camphor julep, or ethereal preparations, it is an excellent stimulant and antispasmodic.”
