Glass bottle with a glass stopper that is covered with a piece of leather with string wrapped round. Black substance inside. Label reads "Comp a powder of gum dragon". Second label reads "10 grains to thirty for a dose". Synonyms: Astragalus gummifer, Gum Tragacanth. Syrian Tragacanth. (known in commerce as Syrian Tragacanth). Savory 1836, p. 42: “Gum Tragacanth. – As an article of the material medica its virtues resemble those of gum Arabic, to which it is sometimes preferred, forming a more tenacious mucilage. One drachm of tragacanth will thicken a pint of water as much as one ounce of gum Arabic.”
