The exterior of the 'Iceberg' Pavilion, Royal Naval Exhibition, Chelsea

A view of the exterior of the 'Iceberg' Pavilion, Royal Naval Exhibition, Chelsea, which was in the court yard beside the area and Eddystone Lighthouse replica. The pavilion roof has icicles hanging from the edge and two polar bears on the roof. A display board records the approval of the Queen and Prince and Princess of Wales at the realistic internal display during their visit on 21 May 1891. According to the Catalogue the scene depicted is 8 October 1850 when HMS 'Investigator' was nipped in the ice and the sledging parties under Lt. S. Gurney Cresswell were preparing to leave the ship to reach the mainland over the floes (page 535).
