A view of the 5-ton 6-inch 'disappearing' coastal defence gun in the Armstrong Gallery, Royal Naval Exhibition, Chelsea. The gun is mounted on a circular hydraulic 'disappearing' mount that uses the recoil to return the gun to the loading position out of sight in its coastal fort to protect it and the gunners. The Catalogue (page 491) states that the mounting was demonstrated at 3pm and 6pm daily. Other times would incur a 2 shilling and 6 pence (2s 6d) charge.
