The large-scale model of the battleship HMS Victoria (1887) on display in the Armstrong Gallery, Royal Naval Exhibition, Chelsea

A starboard broadside view of the large-scale model of the battleship HMS 'Victoria' (1887) on display in the Armstrong Gallery, Royal Naval Exhibition, Chelsea. The mirror-backed model was built to a scale of 1 inch to 1 foot (1:12) and noted in the Catalogue (page 492) as probably the largest and most complete that was ever constructed. It shows the ship with its torpedo nets deployed and was made for the exhibition by Bullivant & Co., manufacturers of wire-rope. The Illustrated Handbook (page 61) states that the model was 34ft long and 5ft 6inches broad to the outside of the torpedo nets. Ten men were employed for four months to make it at the cost of £2000.
