Alvares, Emanuel (Portuguese ca.1545. Roteiro de Nauegacam daqui pera y India. Script in red and black with two coloured drawings in red, blue and yellow of the compass. The manuscript contains detailed instructions for the voyage from Lisbon to India, via Brazil and the Cape of Good Hope; the return voyage to Lisbon; route from Strait of Mecca to Lisbon; information on the storms to be encountered off the Indian coast; soundings off the Cape of Good Hope; etc. The volume summarises the observations and experiences of a skilled navigator who had made the voyage many times and was able to give valuable advice as to the most suitable seasons for travelling, and the safest course. There is a table giving daily declination of the sun for a period of four years, and two coloured drawings showing the points and degrees of the compass. Contemporary French 'fanfare' binding. Emanuel Alvares was Pilot for Joao de Castro on his voyage to India in 1538, and was one of the most experienced navigators of his time. The manuscript bears the signature of Andre Thevet (1502-90), cosmographer of France.
