Notebook of William Carson, containing particulars of vessels built by John Elder & Co (previously Randolph, Elder & Co) at Govan, Glasgow, in the period 1861-1886. The book starts with the MACGREGOR LAIRD (Yard No 14) and ends with the ORMUZ (Yard No 317). Some small constructional drawings are included.
Administrative / biographical background
Carson was born at Johnstone, Renfrewshire, in about 1860. In the period circa 1889-1891 he was a draughtsman at Fairfield Shipbuilding & Engineering Co Ltd and lived at 3 Park Terrace, Govan. At the time of the Scotland census in 1901 he was a shipyard manager and lived with his wife at 42 Brisbane Street, Greenock.
