Slight sketch of H.M. Brig Lily

This is a light pencil sketch of the 16-gun brig ‘Lily’, which was built at Pembroke Dock in 1837. The sheet comes from Album V of the sketchbooks of Lieutenant Robert Strickland Thomas (1787-1853), whose representations of shipping and their rigging attest to his experience as a sailor. Most of his works are naval actions and historical events, but he also represented important contemporary events at sea. Thomas spent most of his second career as a professional marine painter in Portsmouth.
