'Near Oban, 1843' [Scotland]

No. 30 in Fanshawe's Baltic and later album, 1843 - 83. Captioned by the artist on the album page below the image, as title. This monochrome view may show the medieval Dunollie Castle (abandoned as a ruin since 1746) which guards the north entrance to Oban Bay, Scotland, with the island of Kerrera to the left and the sun going down above Skye beyond. This is not certain however, since photographs suggest that Dunollie, though it has a spectacular view over the bay, is less prominent and today surrounded by trees.

Fanshawe married Jane Cardwell on 11 May 1843, when he was a young Commander RN, and this drawing is one of a group (PAI4700 - 4706) recording their first summer holiday together that summer, though his biography (1904) does not give the exact dates.
