'Japanese Junks'

No. 43 of 51 (PAJ2051 - PAJ2101): inscribed by the artist on the album page, as title, with the date '1/70'. The view shows two single-masted Japanese sailing craft with patched square cotton or canvas sails, others beyond and a man in a small boat in the foreground. Colleagues in the Museum of Maritime Science, Tokyo, have kindly identified the two principal vessels as local traders of about 15-45 tons of the type called 'bezaisen'. The location represented (but possibly imagined) is off the south coast of Honshu with the cone of Mount Fuji in the background.
