Come along to the National Maritime Museum this May half term, and take part in a range of fun-filled events. 

Whether you want to unleash your creativity in craft workshops or say hello to character actors, there's plenty to enjoy. 

All sessions are free with no need to book in advance. Check out the full programme below.

Maritime poems

Uncover the inspiring story of Phillis Wheatley, the trailblazing West African poet who became the first published Black woman at just 20. Dive into her world and craft your own maritime poems.

Mythical sea masks

Explore the mystical world of ocean deities from around the globe! Create a mask with paper plates and collage materials while learning about Yemaja (Yoruba), Sedna (Inuit), and the Māori Taniwha. Discover seafarers' superstitions and the offerings they made for protection.

Wednesday 28 May

Constellation viewers: stargazing in a cup

11am-1pm and 2pm-4pm | Learning Space

How did sailors use the stars to navigate the sea? Create a constellation viewer using a a simple coffee cup and take your mini telescope home.

Thursday 29 May

Cartography collages

11am-1pm and 2pm-4pm | Learning Space

Get creative with maps inspired by Jodocus Hondius, a renowned cartographer and religious refugee, who settled in Britain in the 16th century.

Use torn paper to collage maps of places important to your family, adding symbols, details and text to make them uniquely yours.
