Join us for Unbroken, a banner art installation in the Ocean Court space at the National Maritime Museum, which responds to the Zong massacre.
In 1781, the crew of the British slave ship Zong threw 132 enslaved African people overboard, allegedly because there was not enough drinking water on the vessel, in order to claim compensation under their insurance.
The new installation has been made by Evewright Arts, as part of a five-month residency at Royal Museums Greenwich. The community organisation works to seek out, find and preserve untold Black British stories from the diaspora using visual arts.
About the installation
Artist EVEWRIGHT presents a powerful installation of 16 large-scale banners spanning Ocean Court along with poetry from Ionie Richards and a visceral atmospheric stormscape.
Unbroken is a new installation curated by Evewright Arts as part of a five-month residency with Royal Museums Greenwich. The organisation is dedicated to seeking out, preserving and sharing untold Black British stories from the diaspora through visual art and storytelling.
The art installation responds to the 1781 Zong massacre, when the crew of the British slave ship Zong threw 132 enslaved African people overboard, allegedly due to insufficient drinking water, in order to claim insurance compensation.
Unbroken is conceived as an emotional reflection on this atrocity. It centres on the story of the one “Unbroken African” who resisted, climbed back on board, and was thrown into the sea again. The poetry seeks to highlight the inhumanity of the ocean journey of those trafficked and enslaved.
Evewright Arts joined the National Maritime Museum’s Practitioners-in-Residence programme for a five-month residency from July–November 2025 to explore the theme of ocean justice. The residency is led by co-founders EVEWRIGHT, visual artist and Ionie Richards, writer and poet. This project forms part of the celebrations marking the re-opening of the Museum’s newly enhanced Ocean Court.
Unbroken will be on display until 16th February 2026.
