Disabled children, children with additional needs and their families are invited to these poetry sessions at the National Maritime Museum.

Join acclaimed children's poet Simon Mole and musician Gecko for an interactive workshop packed full of poems, raps and songs to spark imagination in a welcoming and supportive environment.

Children and their families will play some fun (and quite silly) games before unlocking their poetry powers to help come up with a song or a story that celebrates the sea!

Sessions are tailored to SEND children under 13 years and their families.

The sessions are free, but you do need to pre-book. If there are no tickets showing, the session is fully booked.

Information for visitors

  • These sessions are designed for the whole family. We welcome siblings under 13 years old without SEND, and the sessions will ensure everyone in the family can participate through activities that allow families to work together to get creative.
  • Sessions are relaxed and we understand children may need to leave the room at any time. Adults must accompany children to the sessions and remain with them if the child/ren leave the room. Staff and volunteers cannot be responsible for participants.
  • Sessions take place in the Group Space in the National Maritime Museum.
  • The Museum has a Changing Places facility.
  • For more information on the sessions, email families@rmg.co.uk.

Booking your space

  • As part of the booking process we will ask about any needs your child/ren has. This helps the facilitator develop activities that will engage your child and family and be suited to their interests and access requirements. This information is not shared beyond the family programme team and facilitators.
  • Ticket sales will end at the start of the session slot.
  • Your ticket includes entry to the National Maritime Museum.

Our facilities include

  • Limited on-site parking contact families@rmg.co.uk in advance for more information
  • Wheelchair access
  • Level access to the Group Space
  • Electric doors
  • Mix of seating (chairs with or without arms, benches, mats, small beanbags)
  • SEND-friendly activities
  • Specialist facilitators

Meet our facilitators: Simon Mole

Simon Mole is a poet. He has more than 15 years' experience using rap and poetry in community and education settings, including projects with National Literacy Trust and The Poetry Society. His latest book is featured on the Franco Manca pizza menu! That’s worth a cheesy smile!

His favourite sea creature is an ichthyosaur – who were around at the same time as the dinosaurs and were discovered by Mary Anning when she was just 12 years old!

Meet our facilitators: Gecko

Gecko is a singer storyteller. That's a fancy way of saying his songs usually have quite a lot of words in. He has worked with Simon on pieces for children and their families since 2019. He is a regular performer at a big music festival called Glastonbury festival and loves writing songs about animals.

His favourite sea creature is a sea otter because they hold hands with each other when they sleep so they don’t drift away from each other, and that is well cute!
