A series of papers by William Bruce, surgeon on HMS HASTINGS, including a journal of Queen Adelaide trip on HMS HASTINGS with images of medals and portraits; a page of a journal from William Hutchison, dated 3 December 1807 including his capture when apprentice in his father's vessel EXPEDITION; a letter addressed to William's friends 9 July 1859 to the office of the dockyards at Chatham;a letter from Jane Hutchison to William Bruce before they were married 10 December 1818; a letter from William Bruce to his son Reverent William Bruce, 12 April 1849; letters to James and Margaret; account of the expenses of Williams Medical education in London and Edinburgh in 1813 and 1814; pictures of Jane Hutchison married to William Bruce and a picture of William Bruce, Deputy Inspector General of Hospitals and Fleets and newspaper clipping titled 'Late Dr William Bruce.' Also included is a typed transcription of William Bruce's journal.

William Bruce, Inspector-General of Hospitals, married Jane Hutchison, his cousin, December 1821, and settled in Peterhead. They had five children- William, Barbara Anne, Margaret, Christian, and Erskine.
