Mount Erebus taken from Terra Nova (1884)

A view of the active volcano Mount Erebus, taken fairly close inshore from the discovery ship Terra Nova (1884). The icy slopes of Ross Island terminate in sheer ice cliffs in the middle distance. The sea is clear of ice.

The print has a typed caption: 'Erebus at 7 p.m. Jan. 3rd 1911.'
