Meteor spectroscope
Meteor spectroscope. This instrument is a binocular type object and is used for viewing the spectrum. It is made up of a wooden casing with sliding shutters and two prisms.
This spectroscope comes from a 14-drawer cabinet found in the Herschel family home in the 1950s. The contents of this and a similar cabinet seem to suggest that they were used by successive generations of the family to store specimens, material and apparatus for carrying out experiments.
This spectroscope was designed by Alexander Stewart Herschel and John Browning specifically for the observation of meteors.
