Refractor telescope
A small refractor telescope with a leather lens cap.
This telescope comes from a 14-drawer cabinet found in the Herschel family home in the 1950s. The contents of this and a similar cabinet seem to suggest that they were used by successive generations of the family to store specimens, material and apparatus for carrying out experiments.
This telescope, unlike the others in the Herschel collection, gives an upright image, which is to say it is designed for navigation rather than astronomy. It was almost certainly the property of Col. John Herschel, who was a Royal Engineer in India between 1856 and 1886.
