Event schedule
Workshop One: Web of Connections
12pm-4pm | Rethink Space
Drop in, explore, connect and share in this interactive workshop which weaves together the connections between UK and Latin America – one thread, one story, all interconnected.
Grab a marker, trace your roots, add your story and the future you’d like to explore within Latin America and beyond. This workshop takes inspiration from Tejiendo Nuestro Futuro and is led by artist Valeria Salinas Toro.
Workshop Two: Waves to the Same Shore
1pm-3pm | Rethink Space
Come together to create a large shared canvas representing the Thames. This workshop draws on the liquid geography of the River Thames and the symbolic power of water as an element of connection, memory and territory.
As part of the session, you'll paint the rivers that connect you to your places of origin. Each line will then join the main flow of the Thames, turning the workshop into an emotional map of flows, migrations and shared memories.
Performance One by Baila Peru UK: Huaylarsh
3.30pm-3.45pm | Propeller Space
A dance full of joy, which originated in the central highlands of Peru, Huancayo and Huancavelica regions. It is performed during Harvest Festivals. The Mantaro Valley is highly fertile for cultivating many varieties of potatoes, corn and beans. The music is by Lucho Quequezana and the song is called “Mantaro”.
Performance Two by Baila Peru UK: Festejo
3.45pm-4pm | Propeller Space
An energetic, passionate and joyful dance. Its name derives from the Spanish word ‘Fiesta’. It has a festive rhythm and it is one of the most popular and representative Afro-Peruvian rhythms danced in many peñas (folk clubs). Every February, Peru celebrates the Black Festival of Chincha in Ica, South Coast of Peru.
Film screening: Tejiendo Nuestro Futuro
1.30pm – 3pm | Lecture Theatre
Tejiendo Nuestro Futuro is a powerful and intimate documentary that captures the stories of older generations in the Latinx community in London. Spanning the 1970s to the present-day, it highlights the generation of voices that forged bonds of solidarity, organised grassroots movements and sparked social change, to lay the foundations for a more inclusive society.
The film calls for new generations to continue the fight for visibility, justice and recognition for Latinos in the UK.
Tejiendo Nuestro Futuro panel discussion and Q&A
3pm-3.30pm | Lecture Theatre
Join host Olga Elizabeth Maher and guest speakers Sylvia Velasquez and María "Pelusa" as they discuss the themes of the documentary – and why this film is important to the Latinx community in the UK.
