Join us for the opening of Unbroken, a banner art installation in the Ocean Court space at the National Maritime Museum, which responds to the Zong massacre.
In 1781, the crew of the British slave ship Zong threw 132 enslaved African people overboard, allegedly because there was not enough drinking water on the vessel, in order to claim compensation under their insurance.
The new installation has been made by Evewright Arts, as part of a five-month residency at Royal Museums Greenwich. The community organisation works to seek out, find and preserve untold Black British stories from the diaspora using visual arts.
As part of the launch event, artist Ionie Richards will deliver a spoken word performance. The night will also feature a dance ceremony by leading African dance practitioners, Dr ‘H’ Patten MBE and Peter Badejo OBE, and an artist talk hosted by Victoria Lane, Royal Museums Greenwich's Senior Curator of Art and Identity.
This event is suitable for 18+.
Unbroken will be on display until 15 February 2026.
