Abstract of the log of the American ship HURON, 1800-1801.
An abstract of the log of the American ship HURON, master F. Hill, during a voyage from New York to Greenock, between 14 December 1800 and 14 January 1801.
The log was made by William Gilmour, a Glasgow merchant, travelling as a passenger. It includes details of a hurricane, during which heavy seas damaged the fore end of the ship and carried overboard two crew members. The cover of the notebook has an original engraving showing a scene from 'The Children in the Wood' by the playright Thomas Morton. There are two letters from 1939 regarding the possible publication of a transcript in ‘Sea Breezes’ magazine.
