'Eimeo [Moorea] from near Papeiti [Tahiti, Society Islands], Augt 25th 1849'
No. 12 in Fanshawe's Pacific album, 1849 - 52. Captioned by the artist on the album page below the image, as title. Fanshawe's 'Daphne' arrived at Papeete, Tahiti, on 21 August 1849. He had intended to sail for Eimeo on 25th but the French Governor, M. Lavand, who was away in the Leeward Islands of the group arrived back the evening of the 24th especially to meet him and invited him to dinner the following afternoon. Since Fanshawe was ready to sail, and postponed doing so, this drawing was presumably made in the hours before his dinner appointment. It looks west towards the east end of Eimeo (now Moorea), presumably from just west of Papeete. The beach shown is of Tahiti's volcanic black sand. This is one of a group of 11 Fanshawe drawings of the Society Islands, PAI4616 - PAI426: three show Moorea (PAI4617, PAI4621-PAI6622) and four Tahiti (PAI4617 - PAI4620).
